This wary animal is known
as the “Wild Turkey”, it can be either the smartest and / or dumbest bird
on earth, all during the same hunt. Both Arizona and New Mexico have large populations of
Merriam’s Turkey. Arizona has an up and coming population of Gould’s
Turkey.
Our Northern Arizona operations offer the best opportunity to harvest a
Trophy Merriam’s. These ‘Turks’ can be found at elevations ranging in
elevation from 4,000 feet to 8,500 feet, and are found from the
eastern mountains all the way north to the Mogollon Rim.
They are very elusive and
at times can be very difficult to locate. However once located the
“EXCITEMENT BEGINS” with the calling and gobbling in of these birds.
Arizona offers two
separate hunting seasons, for Turkey. “Spring Gobbler Only” runs Mid April
through late May with the Fall Hunt in Mid October. To hunt Turkey, in
Arizona, you do have to draw a permit with the application deadline in
October for Spring Hunts and June for the Fall Hunts. Many offered hunts
run a 50% draw success rate! Arizona also offers
a “Youth Spring Hunt”, in April providing a super opportunity for a ‘first
hunt’ situation, to get that youngster started. Just remember you
must apply for this lottery draw permit.
HWO offers a Fully
Guided / Outfitted hunt for Turkey. Our 3 day (1 X 1) Spring Gobbler Hunt
is “our most popular hunt” and is offered at $1,800.
(Youth $1,500) This is an action packed
hunt offering a great time, lots of calling, as well as the mild Northern
Arizona Spring climate that ranges from 30 to 70 degrees daily. So please
